I ask this on the off-chance that you haven't tried it already, but
can't you use

mount -t hfs /dev/zipdrive /mnt/zipdrive

or some such.  

(btw, I've  zero experience of mac formats or zip-drives) but I would
have thought somthing like the above would be possible.
