To run a core dump:

$ gdb /usr/bin/linuxconf
(gdb) core-file ~/core
(Some message I can't remember)
(gdb) bt
Backtrace appears here.

Frame #0 is the function the crash occurred in.  Sometimes it can be a help.
Note also that it is a rare program that will core dump simply because it
can't allocate colours.  If it does, it needs to be fixed.
