[CLUG] problems with ddd

I'm having acute difficulties persuading ddd 3.1.4 to run on my rh6.0
box. Having despaired of trying to compile it from source, I downloaded
the RPM from Red Hat Powertools. Anyway, when the thing tries to execute
gdb at startup, i get the following message:

   cannot open /dev/pts/1: Input/output error

Sure enough, /dev/pts/1 does not exist. /dev/pts/0 does, though. I tried
putting in a symlink (a la /dev/modem) but got an 'Operation not
permitted'.

Could I just do a cd dev; ./MAKEDEV /dev/pts/1 ? Or does that question
just make it really obvious that I don't have a clue what I'm doing?

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
John.

PS: I went into the Multichannel building last week, and had a pretty
bewildering conversation with the guy behind the desk:

ME: What can you tell me about these new digital tv services that you're
offering?
HIM: Yes, we're preparing some documents about that at the moment.
They're going to be ready by the end of next month.
ME: But you're advertising them on the radio, now.
HIM: Yes, that's right. We'll be rolling them out at the end of the
year.
ME: Then why are you advertising them now?
HIM: At the end of the year.

And I thought you guys were exaggerating!
