I can see that being somewhat controversial. The vegetarians will spin in their
graves. Course, if they'd eaten meat like a normal person, they wouldn't be in
their graves... :)

Hmmm, I'm beginning to waver. Sex sells - ask any marketroid. Then again, sex
selling Linux? Nah, never mind... :)

UCC is cramped? Gods, you might as well borrow Cobh for the day. I shouldn't
really comment here (although you know I will), since I spent all of five
minutes at LAID last year (walk in, recognise nobody, walk out) but I think this
might be going a little overboard - trying to run before you can walk. If this
year was successful though...

Yes Ronan. Do you know anyone that works there? :)

I have my doubts about a Transmeta device (I lost a little respect for them when
the devices were demo'd running Windows too, so I don't care :). The last I
heard about Genesis was a vague "November". But even that makes me shrug
doubtfully, since the ODTR has only just definitely okayed bitstream access to
the local loop. Karlin Killington tells us that "though we may get legislative
permission for unbundling by December, it's anyone's guess when we'll begin to
reap the benefits." Reading the latest press release (June 14) on this tells a
different story though:

"In April this year the Director issued a decision on Local Loop Unbundling.
This provides for the rapid introduction of bitstream access by April 2001 and
also sets the groundwork for investigation full physical local loop unbundling
and line sharing local loop unbundling."

April 2001? We might as well tie two cans together with a big ol' piece of
string. And bitstream access is a token gesture -- it's a half-measure, and
won't tackle the real problem - Eircom's monopoly. But I'm wandering (and
ranting), so to get back to the topic in hand -- even if Genesis do roll out
(A|v)DSL in November or the new year, it ain't gonna be like the States -
they'll screw us to the wall on price. Probably because they'll be forced to,
but still... (Sorry Ronan. :)

As to them launching at the show, there isn't a hope of that happening, unless a
DIRECTOR of the company really pushes for it. (*snigger*). Even then, I
sincerely doubt that a telco attempting to set themselves up as a player would
even consider launching at a Linux Expo. Any Linux Expo.

I like that idea, although it would be a logistical nightmare - people dumping
cars all over the place, carrying rigs around like idiots. Now if was a nice
sunny day, they could just back the car up to an electrical outlet and we could
do it there and then. That'd be a laugh - a big ol' Linux Installfest Picnic.
Don't you give me any of your LIP... :)

You'd have a lot of trouble doing something like that, but it's a damn good
idea. You'd have a field day with the press, because, just like all Irish
people, they love Ireland being better than everyone else at something. Damn
good idea. Well, I'm forcing all my new clients to buy new machines and install
Linux, so that's a start anyway. We might even have three or (god forbid) four
new Linux users by the event... :)
