[CLUG] detecting connections to certain ports

is there any way to check for connections to certain ports without binding
them?
I mean a simple way - I am trying to avoid snort or anything as large (snort
looks cool but the machine in question is a meagre P133 with 32Mb ram and i
thought the net connection slowed when I ran it)

All I want to do is log attempts to access certain ports - I'm not really
even interested in detecting port scans for the moment.  If I want to do
that sort of thing I will look at snort or something similar in more detail.

Do yuo guys know of anything?
