The java rpm doesn't set environment variables for you, you will have to set 
the PATH and JAVA_HOME yourself

AFAIK the rpm automatically installs to /usr/java/jre1.3.1.02
so add /usr/java/jre1.3.1.02 to your PATH and
set JAVA_HOME to /usr/java/jre1.3.1.02

(I think that's the correct path anyway, i'm used to installing the sdk).

The best place to set these in mandrake is /etc/profile that way all users 
will see the changes under all shells.

There already is a PATH= line in /etc/profile so just add extra path info 
there. You will have to make a line yourself for  JAVA_HOME= and below in 
the list of export statements add export JAVA_HOME
