I assume you are talking about the kdm|gdm|xdm graphical logon screen (after your
computer has booted up and started X)?
If so, you have two options:
1.If you are using kdm (the KDE login manager):
You can change the settings for kdm by opening the kde control
centre while logged in as an ordinary user - you'll be asked for the
root password when you try to make changes to the "login manager" tab
(under "system" IIRC)
2. If you don't know which login manager you are using:
log in as root from the console ( hit ctrl+alt+F2 at
the X login screen) and see which of the login managers you are running
(if it isn't obvious) using "ps aux | grep dm". You then need to edit
the rc (config) file for whichever display manager you are using to allow root logins (usally this is just a
case of changing "no" to "yes" in the config file).
The gnome control centre probably has some facility similar to the KDE
one...Debian uses KDE by default I think
In all cases it's probably a good idea to disallow root logins over the
network (this should be the default anyway)
