[CLUG] changing uid/gid

In order to get an NFS write working, the target directory on the
destination machine needs to be owned by the same (numeric) UID/GID
as the writing process on the source machine.

As the machines in question were set up independently for other
purposes, the two accounts involved have different UIDs. Can I just
change one of them in /etc/passwd (and chown any files and dirs
involved)? Is there a program that does this or does it mean vipw?
