I checked and it's also present on three other FC2 machines which don't
have (and never have had) either SCSI card or tape drive.

Yes, it's been in use (with this Adaptec card) on Win machine for
over a year.

No, this is the only one. 

I'm sure I've seen this before, and it turned out to be a missing 
module. It's not the persistent ide-scsi problem with FC2, as this
isn't an IDE drive (I removed the IDE tape drive explicitly because
FC2 doesn't support them). Having had a decent night's sleep for once,
I'm now guessing that there is no SCSI support on that machine, cos
at the time of installation it didn't have a SCSI card, and it's too
dim to notice the addition of a card and tape drive. Kudzu certainly
didn't notice it when  I booted it after adding the card and drive 
(kudzu's sole functions these days seem to be to delay booting for
30 secs if you've left the printer unplugged or turned off, and
occasionally to lose its marbles when you unplug the mouse, by
complaining that your modem has gone AWOL :-)
