Found it. Sodding thing is called Autorun (capitalised). It's a KDE
.desktop file. Turns out that if you drag and drop it out of the K
menu onto your desktop (which I did to provide me with a menu to let me
eject a CD), a by-product is that it will then execute on startup, and
try to find a CD in any drive, and if so, mount it. Because the timeout
on reading CDs is massive, it sits there for minutes on end spinning its
wheels waiting for a non-existent CD to respond to its poking.
a) anyone stupid enough to leave a CD in a laptop drive when they
cycle the power deserves everything they get;
b) this is a classic example of what I blogged the other day, about
suppliers of operating systems not understanding the operating
nature of laptops and how they differ from desktops or servers.
