I'd put a few quid on a bet that the kernel version that the machine was booted
from was different from the kernel version of the source tree in /usr/src/linux.

Its the kind of thing im forever doing, downloading the latest and greatest, and
compiling it, but not rebooting until the oppurtunity arises, which could be a 
up to a week sometimes. I got the same problem with vmware, but you can get it
with cdrecord as well.
