i take it with these specialised def's the rfc actually means:

hosts software doesn't have to support more than 63 char hostnames, so
therefore hostnames shouldn't be more than 63 chars. 

And that the SHOULD means "if only host software could".

In which case i must congratulate the rfc writer on his lucid style. :)
