Those reasons aren't exactly obvious to me - I'd be very surprised to
find a consumer graphics card for a PC that didn't have windows
drivers, and extraordinarily surprised to find windows drivers that
came with source code!

There'll be better support in v4, but XFree86 does currently have
support for the TNT cards - see http://www.xfree86.org

The TNT chips are an nVidia design, TNT cards have been implemented
by Creative, Diamond, STB, and others.
