The "compatibility mode" in ssh2 is basically 'if you fail to connect,
exec("ssh1")' - you must have ssh1 installed *as well* for this to
work.  Clumsy and, since the ssh2 timeout is of the order of ten
seconds, extremely slow for interactive operation.

I don't know *why* the SSH people decided to mess with ssh2 to such an
extent, but it's very borken in its current incarnation; this is a
definite "vote with your feet" situation.
