It won't actually help with your current problem, but the second
line should be
AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps

Hmm are you using apxs to install PHP? I noticed that it doesn't add the
lines to enable the module properly if you're using mod_ssl - a very weak
possibility I guess :-}
