[ILUG] probs mounting proc @ boot time

having messed around with configuring modules I get the following
message at boot time, after which nothing happens (booting stops):
  Mounting local file systems . . .
proc on /proc type proc (rw)

To set up modules I had recompiled kernel, with modules for almost everything
(dos, vfat, cdrom, zip etc) except disk that / is on. I then did "make modules",
"make modules_install" and got messages about "unresolved symbols".
The machine rebooted fine after this.

I then read in the KERNELD_MINI_HOWTO that those "unresolved" messages were due to
modules that I had excluded but were hanging aroud from previous kernel recompile.
So I followed the advice of the HOWTO and deleted the contents of /lib/modules to
clean out unwanted modules and then did another "make modules_install".
It's after this that the machine stopped during reboot.

Any ideas how to get the boot process to continue as normal? (I can
access / by doing "init=/bin/sh rw" at LILO)

TIA
Matthew
