[ILUG] What's the story with MD5 & crypt()

i remember seeing the answer to this question somewhere a while ago, but i
can't remember it.. :(

i have a vague idea it worked in some automagic way. Or else it's a setting
in a file in /etc somewhere. Try rummaging thru /etc/security,
/etc/system... etc..
