IOL doesn't use PAP or CHAP.  After sending your username and password
in response to the login: and password: prompts, my chat script waits
for protocol:  (well, 'otocol:' actually...) and sends ppp.  Then
pppd takes over and starts the protocol negotiation stuff.  

I know nothing about KPPP, but it sounds like the 'script' authentication
option is the way to go.  Just make sure that the chat script responds
to the protocol: prompt.  It sounds like your KPPP is out of sync with the
IOL prompts.
