I think Lars said it - different focus. THe free software community think
in terms of "what could I put in this OS that would be cool?? What would I
like to have in it?", whereas Sun have to think about it in terms of "what
do we have to put in to make our product sell in the high-end server
market?" In this area, new features are good, but quality, stability and
reliability are better. To use the drill analogy, you can use the Mc$oft
drill as fast as you want as long as you don't mind throwing a drill bit
every now and then, or even the drill blowing up in your hands, but with
the Solaris drill, you can keep going until you run out of holes.

As for usability, I'll agree, the basic stuff you get with Solaris sucks
ass, in fact most of the people here probably have their own /usr/local
dir with a whole load of linux stuff they downloaded and compiled for
solaris (I know I do). So what? THere are a lot more free software
developers out there than there are sun developers. The free guys develop
what they want because they want to, while us sun guys develop what we are
told to because we're paid to. Who do you think is going to produce the
more user-friendly stuff?
