There is also the Loki installer program (I know it's for games atm).. 
They've released that for general use.

Methinks the problem in this case is where do you want stuff installed?
(I like to put things I compile in /usr/local, Kate likes them in
/usr/local/packages/<package_name>, Sun puts stuff in /opt and /usr/opt,
and generally rpm's put things in /usr)

If you could do something like an install.sh which took a location,
offered you the option of which packages to install, and then just
ran rpm/dpkg with the right options that would be the thing...

(SO 4.0 came in a number of rpms, not just one... anything that big coming
in one huge RPM is braindead IMHO.. much nicer if you get the option
of installing the presentation program etc etc..)
