By my understanding (haven't seen it in action) the box/router thing is
just there to add a long prefix to some or all of the numbers you dial.
This long prefix instructs Eircom (who handle the last mile) to hand the
call over to Esat Telecom. The intelligence isn't in the box but in the
phone network.

When dialling Esat Clear, your dialup software will add the prefix itself,
no box needed.
