[ILUG] new ethernet network

i'm trying to set up a 10base-T ethernet at home. i've got a debian 2.2
system (aka machine A) and a windows system (aka machine B). when i plug
together, i get two green lights on the hub, which leads me to believe
that the physical connection is ok. when i do `ifconfig eth0 down' or
`ifconfig eth0 up' the light goes off and on, respectively.

my problem is that i can't make these machines talk to each other (i'm
just talking about a simple ping). i've followed the usual procedure for
setting up a NIC and the eth0 device in linux, but they just don't seem
to want to play ball.

in short: `ping 127.0.0.1' works, as does ping your own IP, but ping
the other machine's IP doesn't.

the NIC on the debian machine is a 3c509 which seems to be working ok.
the NIC on the windows machine is a NE2000 POS, but it seems to be fine
according to the NE2000 linux driver (i used tomsrtbt).

i'd provide diagnostics, but i don't know how to get them.

comments, suggestions welcome. for now i'd like to verify that the
ethernet works, and if it does try something else.

should i try a crossover cable between the two NICs?

TIA..
-vinny
