[ILUG] problems at startup with sendmail

Hi, 
Im using RH6 on a P2350, whcih has been working fine ujp until now.
Yesterday, upon loading linux, it says loading sendmail,but no okay
message comes up and the system stops doing anything. I can type stuff in
and it appears on screen, but has no effect. How do I get linux to do a
minimilist bootup (and being the lazy git  that I am, I didnt bother
making a boot disk)? and how am I then gonna go about sorting this out?

Two other things:
1. How do I get gnome to start up automatically? (i didnt select it at
setup)
2. I have the indigo cahtfile, and my modem appears to be working (dialing
myself through minicom worked), but how Do I make the chatfile work. Ive
tried chat indigo.chatfile, whcih did nothing.
