Am I the only one who thinks that £1500 is a bit steep for 4 days??? Open
University charges less than that for a full year! Also, just how confident can
a person be after just 4 days? As I figure it, after just 13 days, and £5,000,
you can go from not knowing Linux, to a RHCE certified Administrator? I would
like my certified administrators to have more than two weeks experience. I've
been following a few Linux certification ideas for a while. I agree that the
average power user should have a fast-track course to certification. I, on the
other hand am NOT the typical power user. I would like to see a more detailed,
laid-out path. Maybe a term on getting started, another on basic Sys Admin
skills, then a third term could finish up with the more advanced networking
skills and a final certification. This, I would be willing to pay good money
for. I just couldn't feel comfortable after just two weeks. Maybe we could
develop a Module-type system similar to the ECDL programme? I'm just getting
started with Linux and UNIX in general, but I would like to become more
comfortable and maybe get a certification as well. HOW-TO's and the LDP are
nice, but a little unstructured. This may be just the project for the ILUG to
get involved in. Or at least a small group from the ILUG. I would certainly
devote some time and resources to a project like this. Who is willing to join
me?
Let me lay this out as a challenge:
I have a small, networked system with a bit of storage, in need of quite a bit
of work, but is currently quite stable. Lets develop a self-paced, module-based
training programme that would develop all the skills needed to pass any
UNIX-type certification. I offer as much storage as is needed on my system and
as much time as I can spare for collecting the materials. I am looking for Sys
Admin types to provide the basic material, and education professionals to help
convert this information into training modules. The initial format could be in
SGML. The final goal is a programme similar to the ECDL programme, but for Linux
Admin certification.
I realise that Linux certification is a very hot topic, but I'm not talking
about a rubber-stamp certification. Just the collection of the information
needed, and the development of training materials. So, I say again. Who is with
me?
Cheers,
John Gay
