[ILUG] Newbie Question - laptop install

Check the default runlevel in /etc/inittab

Look for the line below
id:5:initdefault:
This show the runlevel to be 5 (i.e. X login) then go into
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d, where five refers to the runlevel (i.e. go into
rc3.d if your runlevel is 3)

Now find the link to the pcmcia startup script. It will look something
like S09pcmcia (the 09 specifies what point in the startup process it
get called, and the S means that its a startup script). Now either delete
this link or switch off its execute bits (chmod a-x S09pcmcia).
