It's a nice desciption of what's going on behind the
scenes alright. On a related note and if you don't
care about portability (which you always should but
however) the asmutils package from http://linuxassembly.org
might be of interest. It's an x86 assembly implementation
of common unix utils and it's quite extensive.
Actually I've just noticed that the link you gave is
one of the projects @ linuxassembly.org.
Also from a different tack http://busybox.lineo.com/
combines many utils into 1 executable. It uses a small libC
to link against making progs much smaller. Another useful small
libC is @ http://www.fefe.de/dietlibc/
