but SCSI drives make their internal bad block lists available via a
mode-page. in fact there are several available, the manufactured bad
block list, and the grown list (bad blocks since manufacture). by
examining the grown list you can tell whether it's going duff.

there's a tool called scsi-info which will report these lists and
more. (have a dig around sunsite.unc.edu).
