Try using
attrib -s -r
on system, readonly files.
This might include
BOOT.INI
BOOTSECT.DOS
NTBOOTDD.SYS
NTDETECT.COM
NTLDR
PAGEFILE.SYS

Try defragging then...
Use attrib +s +r
after you've finished...

I hope to try win4lin over Christmas - it'll run at least W98SE,
supposedly quite well - maybe it'll let me move to Linux as my main work
machine :-)
