I hear mutt is nice, I've only tried it a coupla times and quite liked it
in a don't-really-like-curses-apps-for-mail way. ;)

My personal recommendation is ExMH -- it does all that stuff, and it'll
pop up gvim windows when you're editing mails -- and gvim has the lovely
syntax highlighting of mails, ie. your quoted comments above are in dark
red, while my text here is in yellow.  And of course multiple mail editing
is fine, using multiple edit windows.  However it's a gui app so it's a
little slower than a terminal app, and it's Tk so some of the GUI
conventions seem a little wierd at first [*].  Nice though, and you get
the following bonuses: (a) it's MH, so it's quite fast for large folders,
(b) reading mail over a terminal connection is fine, since you can use the
traditional MH commands, and (c) the GnuPG/PGP integration and MIME
display is great.

Actually, are there any MH users here?  I have a wee script I wrote
recently to read MH mail offline, using ssh and rsync, and I wonder if
anyone would like to try it out. I was going to stick it on freshmeat but
I wanted to check it first.

[*]: unless you've been using X for a while and are used to app developers
assigning any old behaviour to any old mouse button or look'n'feel ;)
Thank god gtk etc. came along to make things sane(r).
