Yeah, you're probably right, so in your kernel config you have the ES1371
option selected?  I've said no to this and have 'OSS Sound Modules' and 
'Sound Blaster Compatibles' compiled as modules.  You might give that a
try (you'll need to do that anyway to compile the sound, soundcore etc. 
modules).

Sounds messy (read: I don't know how to do it :-) ), but I'd leave it as a 
last resort.

Yeah, for some reason they don't work with insmod, but they 
do with modprobe (possibly because modprobe uses /etc/conf.modules
and insmod doesn't?).  My /etc/conf.modules was written by sndconfig,
so you should probably run that again after compiling them.
