K - problem solved.

I tried the suggestion of booting off an installation cd
and copying kernel and modules etc. but couldn't find
the files.

Eventually had bright idea - possibly worth remembering.
Mandrake comes with Lnx4win, which allows it to be installed
to a Windows partition using a umsdos image file etc.
I installed a minmum system, booted it up, mounted
the real linux drives and copied the original kernel
modules back onto it.

So machine now boots, and i've learnt a valuable lesson - namely
don't put everything as a module just cause you can. In fact,
I discoved the reason the machine wouldn't boot - I had made
the ide-disk driver a module (major doh!).

Anyway - enough stupidity for one day,
Steve
