[ILUG] Who is blocking /dev/dsp

try fuser. eg 

fuser /dev/dsp.

Note that RH6 uses a sound daemon (esd, part of esound iirc). Which is a
much better way of doing things. However it does mean mean /dev/dsp is
always in use, which is annoying if you still have to use app's that don't
know about esd.

To make live easier esd takes a commandline arg to make it release /dev/dsp
when idle.  Check the man page for this option.
