We had quite a thread on this a few months ago. Search the archives
for 'MB/s', 'SCSI', 'IDE', 'diskspeed war', 'mine's faster than your's,
nya nya', etc...
Seriously, mileage seems to vary widely with different brands, models,
kernels, and colour of underwear. Make your own measurements with
hdparm -t on a quiet system and draw your own conclusions.
