[ILUG] Topics for Linux Course

Many thanks for the mailings re the above. Obviously there is no one way
to
approach a course in Linux, judging by the variety of replies and
suggestions.
Maybe this could be formalised, some sort of "Linux Course Working
Group" to
establish a recommended curriculum. 

There is increasing scope for the introduction of Linux courses into 3rd 
level colleges. The Linux course that I am teaching is a module of the
National 
Certificate in Computer and IT Support, which is being run by a number 
of the ITs. Technically, the syllabus outlines a module on Unix (the
module is
entitled "Operating Systems 2" - with an unfortunate abbreviation);
however, Unix 
fell by the wayside here in AIT a couple of years ago (before my time).
Linux 
was felt to be an appropriate replacement for the Unix module - more
than 
appropriate. But this applies only to AIT - I have no knowledge of what
the
other participating colleges are doing. There is scope here to push
Linux
as the recommended operating system for this module in the absence of
Unix in
the other colleges.

I would be happy to make my notes available as part of this process, as
suggested.

However, this would have to be on a restricted basis - purely to prevent
blanket criticism of my notes or approach (rather than out of any desire 
to claim copywrite of the notes).

I'll see about this during the easter holidays (Mar 17 - Apr 3). For the 
moment I'll be too busy with lectures and setting exams (already!), but
I
think it would be a worthwhile endeavour, as the begging of the process  
twoards a core curriculum. Then, the argument in favour of Linux as a
course 
of study in 3rd level could be backed up by a well-established and
documented
curriculum.
