[ILUG] ILUG: compiling kernel problems

I installed Mandrake 7 and I tried to compile a different kernel.
I tried 2.2.14, 2.2.16, 2.4.0-test2 and they call came up with errors.
I've installed Red Hat 6.2 and whenever I've tried compiling both the
2.2.16 and 2.4.0-test2 kernels and they keep coming back with errors.
The errors are different all the time though, the 2 most common are
Error 1 :    [dir_fs] and received signal 11.
I thought it might be a problem with Ram becuase of the signal 11 so
I ran
a memory test on my Ram and it came up fine,

Anybody got any ideas?
