I'm looking to organise an installfest, for maybe the first weekend in
september (I was thinking earlier, but a lot of people have holidays in
august, so it's a slow month).

 Anyway, the attractions would be:

Newbies can bring machines, and get experts to install/configure stuff.
Anyone with problems installing/fixing/configuring/compiling stuff can
        get help
People can share CDs (bring your own blanks, or try sell them), and
software. Perhaps we can have a nice big LAN in the place, so
people can download/swap stuff like the latest helixcode/KDE2
stuff, AVI players etc - maybe even setup a gnutella network for
        the day
Old-time ILUG heads can bring machines with the newest and most
obscure installs on them for us that are itching for something
other than RedHat/Slackware/Corel. Hopefully by then, Debian 2.2
will be out, and i'm sure someone can finally prove to me that
Debian can be installed (I've never managed it in the past!).
If I can get people that have spent time messing with GLX/Voodoo/Quake
etc. to help people setup games on their machines, I'm sure we can
get some big multiplayer games going too...
We'll also see can get get other linux-toys, like linux-based webcams,
        the net-note, etc.

First, I need to know how interested people would be. To cover the cost
of the big venue, as well as sponsorship, we may end up charging in -
something like £2 to come, £1 if you bring a machine/something to show
off. Can people mail me off list with "INSTALLFEST" in the subject line to
show interest, so I know how much interest there is in the idea ?
