 Out of curiousity, do you think that RAID1+0 with say four high-spec 4GB
IDE drives would be better than over 2 9GB SCSI drives, or is striping a
marginal improvement compared to going SCSI ?

 It's just I noticed there is a nice company selling IDE diskarrays, that
have a SCSI connector out the far end. Seems like a nice idea, if the
performance was suffcient...
