Steven,
if you are referring to the Lucent winmodem driver, I had the same
problems with pppd dying when started. I got it working by using a newer
version of the Lucent driver ( www.linmodems.org/linux568.zip ) and also
updating my modem firmware ( version 5.75 or 5.66 can't remember exactly,
I had to try a couple of different versions from http://808hi.com/56k/ltwin7.htm
It works with 2.2.12 or 2.2.14 kernels, but not 2.2.16 ( pppd core dumps ).
I use kppp ( KDE ) which tells pppd what settings to use, so I don't have
precise pppd scripts - I haven't tried BuyandSell either.
Of course, it could also be a problem with login scripts : I'd be happy
to tinker with kppp to produce settings if that's any help, but I would need some
info on buyandsell's setting's ( do they require individual login identities - I had
a quick look at the website, but the registration page asked a lot of nosey questions
so I didn't bother registering ? ).

PS: in case anyone is wondering is secretly wondering about the effectiveness
of "winmodems", check out the size of the driver :

Module Size Used by
ppp_deflate 40004 0 (autoclean)
bsd_comp 3824 0 (autoclean)
ppp 20748 2 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate bsd_comp]
slhc 4328 1 (autoclean) [ppp]
ltmodem568 452936 2

The best ISP without question is buy and sell. I've been using them for the
last 6/7 months and never had a disconnect or failed to get through. The
only thing is I don't know how it is going to Linux as pppd always dies on
connect (dont know if it is my script or the fact that I am using a Win/Lin
modem with driver issues) if you work out a script I'd appreciate a copy of
it
