[ILUG] Missing sound and network card drivers

Has anyone else had this with RH 6.2? I have installed it on several
machines and a pattern is beginning to emerge: it is failing to
recognise the existence of a sound card and a network card.
Note this is *not* a failure to detect the right or wrong card and
locate the driver for it, it's a failure even to see that there is a
sound card or network card installed (for example the installation
script doesn't prompt for any network details).
In a few cases it has detected the presence of the card *and* got them
right, so obviously part of it work...but it's failing way too often. A
manual attempt (via netconf or sndconfig) always gets the same type of
failure (names differ but the error message is the same):
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/{dir/driver}.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy
(where {dir/driver} is the relevant directory and driver module name
for the driver you attempt to install.) This applies both for the sound
cards and for the network cards. Clearly the configs are picking up a
stray value, or looking in the wrong place -- but where?
Currently sought: drivers (or pointer to the right one) for
a. 3-Com FE575C 10/100 PCMCIA network card
b. 3-Com Etherlink III 3C509B network card
c. ESS Maestro 3P PCI sound card
RH seem to have taken some drivers out of their lists in 6.2, as a
lot of the machines I am tackling have been running 5.2 happily for
ages. This looks like either carelessness or arrogance, although I am
loth to believe this of RH -- they haven't turned into Microsoft yet :-)
All suggestions gratefully processed...
