Installed Mandrake 7.1 last night.
Install process was impressive, although I elected not to touch my
partitions this time, I did select the Resierfs(sp?) as the filesystem.
Up until the configuration everything went ok, but then the trouble
started.
Network setup.
I have a fairly standard DEC NIC with a Tulip chipset of some sort. It's
been supported by Linux for ages. 
The network setup failed to configure it though, which is the first time
that ever happened on that machine! Once that failed I went back and
tried to configure the modem, but I didn't have the details for surf no
limits so I didn't try too hard.
The came X, and I tried XFree86 4.0 which already runs on my originial
Linux install. That failed to detect my video card (Riva TNT) so I
selected that, found my monitor in the monitor section and clicked test.
The screen went back to the console and I got a message saying it
couldn't open /var/log/somefile.. which was strange.
Needless to say, X didn't work when I rebooted in runlevel 5.

At least it's nice about it though, when X failed, I pressed return a
few times and it went into runlevel 3. Not sure if it would have changed
without keyboard intervention.
Running Xconfigurator setup the old version of X which worked fine.

KDE looks nice, icons are nice and big. Gnome+Helix is sweet. I have to
admit I'm not interested in those though, I rather a simplistic Window
Maker session with lots of xterms/rxvts and netscape for testing my web
development stuff.

Just out of curiousity, I pushed the power button while the machine was
still on and filesystems still mounted. Resier reported it had to
"replay 3 transactions" when next I booted up and it did so in less than
11 seconds on a 1.5GB partition with just over 1GB of data!

The GRUB loader is very nice too, let me alter command line parameters
which was handy when I wanted to go back to my old setup on my first
disk..
