from RFC1122 station requirements:

There are two key requirement issues related to multihoming:

            (A) A host MAY silently discard an incoming datagram whose
destination address does not correspond to the physical
interface through which it is received.

            (B) A host MAY restrict itself to sending (non-source-
routed) IP datagrams only through the physical
interface that corresponds to the IP source address of
                 the datagrams.

So there is no requirement or even reccomendation in RFC to bind IP to
interface in any way. ie this behaviour need not be linux specific.

maybe for some things.. but in general it's very handy not to have such
bindings. if you do need it, you can just tinker with routing/ipchains to
get the desired result. (probably).
