[ILUG] Installing tar files?

How do I install a tar file? I downloaded the sendmail script and the sms
client script last night. I untarred both files but I do not know how to
install them. Using the untarred sms client script, I typed "make install
sms_client-2.0.8y in a terminal window and hit "enter". I got the message
"no rule to make target 'install'. I then tried the "install" command and
got the message: 'install' too few arguments. Can somebody help? Excuse the
stupid question, but I am still a newbie.
