Is this confusion a common thing ? At a site I support the network has
recently been upgraded from co-ax. to properly installed Cat-5, sockets, &
patch panels. We've used two 10M hubs which were knocking around (because
most of the kit is old and can't support 100M) and a new 100M switch to
which we've connected the Linux boxes and the newer Macs which have 100M
support.

Problem arose when a new G4 Mac was purchased. This will NOT work on the
switch, although an iMac works fine. The Mac vendor brought in a 100M hub
and the G4 works fine connected to the switch cascading through the hub. The
Mac vendor (of course) claims that the switch must be faulty (despite the
fact that everything else works fine with it, including the hub he brought -
shades of "They're all out of step except my Johnny"). Now, I'm safely out
of the loop here, not having supplied the networking kit, but I'm taking a
little heat, and I'm just wondering if 10M/100M auto-negotiation problems
are not unknown. The G4 works also with the old 10M hubs, so I'm presuming
that what's failing is the speed negotiation  G4 <-> switch.
