I get a similar error.  My first guess is that something changed on their site
within the last few days.  I was able to get a license a couple of days ago
for the linux v2 beta without any headaches.  I'd try dropping a note to
webmaster at www.vmware.com with the steps you took and a copy of the error
page (the proxy via upstream server thing) and see if they can fix it, or at
least explain why it's coming up.
