I recommend that you should try Visual Age for Java, Linux edition from IBM,
I have been using it for writing servlets and it's great. It's a fully
integrated IDE with drag and drop components, visual screen design/layout,
applet viewer etc. The Entry Edition is available as a free download once
you register, though it is limited to 500 classes per project. It's also
available for any Java2 platform.

If you need one of the more powerful versions of VAJ (Professional or
Enterprise), instead of buying them, it's cheaper to pay for a subscription
to the IBM Developers Domain which then allows you to download the other
versions.
