Yes the 2 kernels were the same version.

It was a few weeks ago since I recompiled the kernel, but I think that
I did indeed do a modules_install. But I do not think that I changed
anything about smbfs. 

So this kind of behaviour means that you cannot have 2 different
configurations of the same kernel installed ?
