[ILUG] console permissions

Evening,
I installed RH5.2 onto a machine in work and then I went to upgrade it to
RH6.1. The machine then decided it didn't want to boot off the CD or
floppy anymore and didn't entertain the idea of a HDD upgrade. So I copied
up the CD onto the HDD and upgraded every RPM one by one (yes it was as
exciting as it sounds!)
So anyway, I now have a working redhat system, running all the new rpms.
but X only works for root. When I try to run it as a normal user I
get.......
Authenication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
UH? So one google search later I found something from the dutch LUG, and
they were suggesting (at least I think they were, my dutch is
non-existant)....that I add the following into the /etc/pam.d/xserver
"auth required pam_permit.so". But
"account required /lib/security/pam_permit.so" was already there, so I
just commented that out, but still no joy.
Someone from the Chicago LUG suggested "chmod go+w /dev/console" but still
no joy.
Anyone got any ideas? I mean X runs fine as root, just not as any other
user! Most confusing!
Laters,
Dave
