[ILUG] memory issues

look at the top of your boot messages. Eg:

Mar 30 02:01:25 fogarty kernel: Memory: 126044k/131008k available
(1412k kernel code, 4576k reserved, 99k data, 192k init, 0k highmem)

kernel statically allocated memory and 'weird' memory (eg dos high
mem, acpi reserved memory, etc..) is deducted from total RAM when
reporting memory. It's just a lot more noticable on a 4MB system than
on a 128MB system.

try and compile as minimal a kernel as possible.

Nope, the amount of ram reported by free is consistent whenever I
use the same kernel parameters/configuration. Also, dos
consistently reports that I have 4 megs.
