As somebody who can still remember the complete newbie days... it should be
said that after a bit you'll see an error message like 'databse is more than
8 days old' when you try to use locate. To correct this you type
'updatedb'. This updates the file databse. Your linux box runs some
scheduled tasks (usually late at night) and if you have your machine left on
- on RH anyway - updatedb should be one of these tasks so you never have to
do it manually. Also, as a regular user you probably won't have permission
to use updatedb so type 'su root' and enter your root password at the next
line. type updatedb and then type 'su -'. I know this is probably
pedantic and I'm sure somebody out there will find something to correct me
on (I'm humble!!) Thing is, I've read many articles on linux basics and
they mention this locate but don't give the full picture.
