Depends on the chipset. A lot of the cheap and nasties are based on the
Realtek sets, which is supported, and even more of them are generic PCI
NE2000 clones which are also supported.
£65 is not an astoundingly cheap price for a 5 port hub and a couple of
cards, but an even cheaper solution may be to buy some BNC capable cards and
use them with a bit of coax - retro technology, but just fine for a couple
of machines or three - I'll let you have a couple of S/H cards with
appropriate cable and connectors for £25, or you could look in Buy And Sell.
